A 100 year+ home is not just a piece of history. It is someone’s next chapter.

Almost one third of the country’s privately rented homes were built before 1919. That compares with 20% of owner occupied homes and just 6% of social housing. These national figures remind us how much our housing market still depends on homes built generations ago.
The bay windows, high ceilings and original fireplaces might capture a buyer’s attention. Yet the condition of the roof, heating, windows and ventilation deserves just as much consideration. Age alone does not tell you whether a home is comfortable, economical to run or well maintained. The care it has received matters enormously.
If you own an older home, keep records of repairs and improvements. They can help a future buyer understand what has been done and what might need attention. And if you are considering a move in, look beyond the photographs. Character is easy to admire, yet understanding the upkeep helps you make a better decision.
